A Germanic Sandwich: Dutch between English and German

A comparative linguistic conference

A Germanic Sandwich will be the second in a series of conferences in which Dutch is compared with its closest Germanic neighbours, English and German. Three years ago the first one took place in Berlin to commemorate the appearance of Nederlands tussen Duits en Engels (‘Dutch between German and English)’, a study by the renowned Dutch linguist C.B. van Haeringen. In 2006 (the 50 th anniversary of Van Haeringen’s book) the conference papers were published under the same title. The participants agreed that similar events should be held regularly. This second two-day conference will be hosted by the Centre for Dutch Studies and the Centre for Comparative Linguistic Research. The conference organising committee are Roel Vismans ( Sheffield ), Matthias Hüning ( Berlin ) and Fred Weerman ( Amsterdam ). The conference languages will be Dutch, English and German. A Germanic Sandwich is de tweede in een reeks conferenties waarin het Nederlands wordt vergeleken met zijn naaste Germaanse buren: het Duits en het Engels. Drie jaar geleden vond de eerste conferentie in Berlijn plaats om de publicatie van Van Haeringens boek, Nederlands tussen Duits en Engels, te herdenken. In 2006 (50 jaar na het verschijnen van Van Haeringens boek) werden de handelingen van die conferentie uitgegeven, eveneens getiteld Nederlands tussen Duits en Engels. De deelnemers besloten om dergelijke conferenties regelmatig te organiseren. Deze tweede tweedaagse conferentie wordt georganiseerd door het Centre for Dutch Studies van de University of Sheffield in samenwerking met het Centre for Comparative Linguistic Research. De organisatie is in handen van Roel Vismans (Sheffield), Matthias Hüning (Berlin) en Fred Weerman (Amsterdam). De voertalen van de conferentie zijn Nederlands, Duits en Engels.
